Who is Anna Hazare?

Anna Hazare (Kisan Baburao Hazare) was born on 15th June, 1937 in Bhingar town of Ahmedabadnagar district of Maharashtra.

He studied in Bombay (now Mumbai) upto the age of 7 and then started selling flowers due to financial problems. In 1962, he joined Indian Army and was posted in Khem Karan sector in 1965 Indo-Pak war. He voluntarily retired from army in 1978.

Ralegan Siddhi
After retirement, he went back to his village Ralegan Siddhi, and undertook various measures for the upliftment of the village. With his tremendous efforts the evils of tobacco, cigarettes, beedies and alcohol were removed from the village. He also started Grain Bank in the village with the objective of providing food security to needful farmers. He also undertook the development of Watershed development in the village and converted the land under irrigation from 70 acre in 1975 to 2500 acres.
He also worked tremendously in the development of milk production in the village, education improvement, collective marriages, removal of untouchability and gram sabha of the village.

Other Activities
1991 – Launched Brashtachar Virodhi Jan Andolan against corruption in Ralegan Siddhi
1997 – Protest against malpractices of power loom purchase
2003 – Fast unto death against corruption against 4 NCP ministers
He is also credited to making development of strong RTI Act in Maharashtra which was further used by union government for central act.
2006 – Efforts in creation of “The Prevention of Delay in Discharge of Official Duties Act, 2006”
2007 – Campaign against liquor from food grains
2011 – Movement for development of Jan Lokpal Bill

Awards & Recognition:-
Anna Hazare has been honoured with many awards and recognition which includes Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Priy Darshini Vriksha Mitra Award, Krushi Bhusahan, Young India, Man of the year, Paul mittal National Award and Transparency international integrity award.
